The Festival Fortnight will include a variety of entertainment

Excitement is building ahead of this year’s action-packed Buckingham Festival Fortnight, which begins on Friday 3 July.

The two-week festival, funded by Aylesbury Vale District Council and Buckingham Town Council, is one of the highlights on the town’s cultural calendar and offers something for people of all ages – including classical music, drama, comedy, arts and sports.

Week one of the programme includes the town’s long-running Summer Festival of music, which is being held from 4 to 11 July. The week features a variety of classical concerts and recitals including performances by the London Mozart Piano Trio, Buckingham Choral Society and The Maurizi Ensemble.

The Summer Festival’s final flourish is a gala night at the Church of St Peter and St Paul on 11 July, starring The Orchestra of Stowe Opera and leading Czech mezzo soprano Edita Randova. The concert will feature Dvorak’s charming Gypsy Songs and the glowing first Serenade by Brahms.

Highlights from the second week include a performance by Antipodean comic Adam Hills, a boules tournament in the Old Cattle Pens and live music from local youth bands at Band Jam.

The Festival Fortnight will come to a close on 19 July with a free family fun day in the town centre, from 11.30am to 4pm. It will feature live music, a mobile climbing wall, circus skills, street entertainment and a craft market.

For the first time local traders in Buckingham will be hosting an arts trail during Festival Fortnight, using their premises to exhibit the work of local artists. A variety of artworks will be on display, including paintings, ceramics and photography.

Councillor David Thompson, Cabinet Member for Leisure at AVDC, said: “I’m delighted that the Festival Fortnight is taking place once again. It is enjoyed by local residents but also brings many people into Buckingham and is a showcase for what the town has to offer. I know it will be a great success and enjoyed by all.”

Councillor Robin Stuchbury, Chairman of Buckingham Town Council’s Town Centre and Events Committee, said: “This year our two councils have tried to bring more varied activities into the Fetsival Fortnight, working in partnership with different local organisations to create an event fitting for a market town. We hope to have provided something of interest to everyone.”

A full programme is available on AVDC’s website at www.aylesburyvaledc.gov.uk and can also be collected from the Buckingham Tourist Information Centre in the Old Gaol and the town council offices in Cornwalls Meadow. Alternatively, contact AVDC on 01296 585210 for details.
