A leaflet is available from the tree officers describing these regulations in more detail. Under the Hedgerow regulations 1997 it is against the law to remove most countryside hedgerows without permission.

The removal of a hedgerow (unless exempt) without prior approval is an offence, and can also lead to the issue of an Hedgerow Replacement Notice, against which there is a right of appeal.
